Here’s why US farmland returns are consistently high

“Buy land, they’re not making it anymore,” is a quotation often attributed to Mark Twain.

But, in addition to scarcity, there are other macro supply / demand fundamentals that have been pushing US farmland values higher even in the face of a bumper crop and a stronger dollar. In fact, according to the National Council of Real Estate Investment Fiduciaries (NCREIF) direct investing in US farmland has averaged annual returns of 16.92% over the past 10 years.
